Met Gala ~ Rei Kawakubo Comme des Garçons



The Met Gala is a night of fashion, philanthropy, and beauty. The red carpet was filled with exceptional designs, stepping outside the box, and meeting a few friends. The yearly event is held the first Monday in May. The gala's theme this year is Comme des Garçons honoring Rei Kawakubo.

Rihanna hit the red carpet wearing Comme des Garçons fall winter 2016 collection. This gown is three dimensional floral print. She wore Dsquared2 lace up sandals, Dvani and Le Vain jewels, and tourmaline and black diamond earrings from her “Rihanna Loves Chopard." Her hair was in a top bun with long bans and neon blush. Rihanna kept up her reputation on the Met Gala red carpet, while staying true to the theme for the evening.

Nicki Minaj hit the red carpet honoring iconic designer wearing a belt with Rei Kawakubo's face on the front. Her kimono gown by H&M has thigh and cleavage for a beautiful sexy look, Versace black platform shoes. Her jewels are an exceptional finishing avant garde touch. The snake ring by Lydia Courteille was an eye catcher. She completed the look with red lips and fingernails. The gown graced the long staircase with beautiful black roses and red beaded flowing train. What a grand entrance. 

 

The evening continued with great entrances by many celebrities. Katy Perry, co-hosting the evening event, wore Maison Margiela's original. Families made their appearance on the red carpet. Courtney Love and Frances Bean Cobain, mother and daughter, truly enjoyed the event together. The Olsen Twins grace the red carpet in an rare public appearance. Their style for the evening early 1900s bohemian look a shift from the Met Gala theme.
This was the first time since 1983 the evening honored a living designer. Comme des Garcons, founded and designed by Rei Kawakubo, are displaying at The Metropolitan Museum in New York through the fall. This fashion label is a Japanese fashion label meaning "like boys" in French. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, the chairwoman of the Met Gala. She has transformed this event from local to a powerful celebrity philanthropic evening.  The night lived up to all the expectations.
